Boa Morte next name on DPMM FC's list

FORMER English Premier League (EPL) player Luis Boa Morte is the latest name to be on trial with DPMM FC.

The Portuguese international is in the Sultanate and was on the field with the rest of DPMM FC players during training yesterday at the Jerudong Mini Stadium.

DPMM FC are looking to beef up the midfield department which is currently lacking in depth with Mohd Hendra Azam Mohd Idris and Azwan Ali Rahman still relatively young and Azwan Salleh still recovering from injury.

The trio of Italian Domenico Giampa, Ghanaian Stephen Appiah and Brazilian Rodrigo Antonio Lombardo Tosi are the other names that have been linked with Brunei's only professional club over recent weeks.

Boa Morte scored a total of 61 goals in his EPL career where he plied his trade with Arsenal (1997-1999), Southampton (1999-2001), Fulham (2001-2007) and West Ham United (2007-2011).

The 35-year-old was then released by the Hammers in 2011 and plied his trade for Greek side Larissa followed by South African side Orlando Pirates.

Boa Morte returned to England in October 2012 where he laced up for fourth-tiered Chesterfield and his contract was not renewed in January.

He has 27 caps with the national side and has scored one goal in a 5-1 victory over Angola back in November 2001.

The midfielder was also part of Portugal's 2006 World Cup campaign in Germany, where the team reached the semi-finals.

However, the Singapore League (S-League) transfer window will only open in June in time for the second half of the season.

DPMM FC manager, Ali Hj Momin, told The Brunei Times that trials are being held just in case any of their players pick up any injuries.

"This is a back up plan for us just in case we have any players picking up injuries. We need to conduct the tests early so that we know who are the best for the team," said Ali.

"The transfer window will open for three weeks and normally it takes about two for us to run trials and tests. But hopefully there won't be any injuries to our players," he added.

DPMM FC are coming off a 1-0 victory over Balestier Khalsa FC on Friday courtesy of an own goal by captain Tengku Mushadad in the 35th minute at the Jalan Besar Stadium in Singapore.

The victory lifts them to fourth place in the 12-team table on 15 points.

DPMM FC's next game will be away against Harimau Muda at Pasir Gudang in Malaysia on May 1.
